Here is a reference:
"REGIERUNGSRAT ROTTENBERGER. F. Praskac, 1926. Under this awful name may lie hidden a beautiful rose but the world will never know it. Reported to be a Wichuraiana, with clusters of double rose-red flowers."

Regierungsrat Rottenberger is also included in the current Sangerhausen catalogue as follows:
Praskac 1926, Hybrid Multiflora, pale pink to crimson pink, medium size, double, high (over 120cm)
Please note the correct spelling of Rottenberger.
The Praskac nursery still exists in Tulln, Austria (not Czech Republic).

Ah, an early example of the well-known American phobia of Germanic rose names of more than two syllables. Thanks for correcting the spelling and noting these references. Is Tulin possibly one of those cities close to a border? Or perhaps Praskac moved to Austria. I could not find Tulin on my modern atlas. Do you know the name of the current nursery? That is a thread to the present I wouldn't want to miss. Thanks.

Here is the link to Praskac's website. The town is called Tulln, with two l's and no i. The town lies west of Vienna on the Donau river.

On the Webseite it says that Franz Praskac bred the rose Donau at Tulln. The name is clearly of Czech origin, however, as many in the Austria-Hungarian empire the family must have moved to Austria proper already in earlier times.

Thank you for that. Google translates "Regierrungsrat" as government advice. I found something to indicate it means a mid-level ministry position. Can you add anything more? HMF has two roses starting with "Regierungsrat" - - Rottenberger and Stockert.

Google's direct translations are fun! Regierungsrat can be translated as councillor. THe exact position can differ from period to period and country to country. IN Switzerland today a Regierungsrat is a minister of the government of a Canton (you would call it a State in the US).

Friedrich (Fritz) Leo von Rottenberger (3.9.1872 - 27.3.1938) was Director (Governor) for the Public Gardens in Austria. (Reference: Weigl, Sie hatten den grünen Daumen)
