Well, so far I've had about 7 seedlings from Frivolous Pink selfs, all with good fragrance but none worth keeping. This season I finally have some seedlings where FP has taken as the pollen parent - Lynn Anderson x Frivolous Pink. We'll see how they do. FP has a wonderfully delicious fruity fragrance (way more than 'mild' as it says on the HMF description) , beautiful form and color, and is mildew proof, at least in my garden. I'd love to pull some of these characteristics into some nice HT seedlings. It's only negative is the bloom form doesn't last long.

Frivolous Pink indeed does set seed. I have at least 5 large hips on my plant containing many seeds.

It's great that Frivolous Pink has set hips and the hips contain seeds, but that does not necessarily mean that the seeds are viable.  Another rose which has been tested for years sets hips, with seeds, but is sterile in that it is a triploid.  Note: some triploids are fertile, but most are not.  The name of the rose that I am referring to in this post is 'Linda Campbell'.  It is a magnificent rose and "if only" would make a great rose parent.  That is not to be.

I suggest you try growing the seeds you harvest out and if they do turn out to be viable, let us know.  What a great experiment !

Lyn, I was only responding to the comment that Under Reproductive Organs, it states "no pollen" and "no seeds." It does indeed have pollen and seeds. I am anxious to try and germinate the seeds to see whether they are viable. I have used it's pollen on other hybrid teas without getting any resulting seeds, so indeed, it might be the case that the pollen is sterile and the seeds will not yield anything. I sure hope they do, though. I'll let you know sometime next year!

Judy...........

I don't know who wrote the NOTE on the rose page on the HMF site, but I had the impression s/he was quoting from the patent application.  I am interested in the results you get next year, so I am looking forward to your post.  Good luck !

Frivolous Pink sets seed like crazy, at least as selfs, but the seeds are hard to germinate. Still I have had 3 seeds germinate so far and they have produced 3 viable adult plants. All have had the wonderful fragrance, but none have blooms as nice as the mother plant. As far as pollen is concerned, it appears one of the crosses I did this season may have taken. I will update you on this later in the season.

It isn't uncommon for a rose to not be fertile in one location, while it's a rabbit in another. Ralph Moore's original registration of Splish-Splash stated it bore no fruit. In my garden, it does set seed, though I've never tried germinating any. Too many plates to keep spinning! In my area, Iceberg doesn't set many hips. At the beach, it sets fruit as if it's grown for the fruit. It all depends upon what the rose wants. Fortunately, they can't read! Kim

I have had one seed germinate from this year's batch of open pollinated Frivolous Pink seeds. So far a beautiful, strong seedling. I'm hoping it survives!

Congratulations, Judith...

It's the unending persistence of breeders that brings some marvelous roses into our world. I've read that Ralph Moore worked for 15 years before he felt he had a viable miniature rose.

It looks like you have the same kind of patience and determination.

Smiles,
Lyn

One of the most vigorous growing roses I have. By the end of the first year from a bare root it was three feet wide and almost six feet tall. Beautiful blooms with strong stems and the sweetest smelling flowers. Highly recommend.

Dave,

Thanks for the info.  We've added Jim's Nursery to HMF but the listing not very complete.  We would be happy to have Jim complete his HMF listing including all the plants he offers.  Thanks again.

I never post anything and seldom even read my emails; but your rose photos are outstanding. I'm probably stating that which is well known to everyone else. Thank you for posting them. I used one of your photos to make a tag for my Frivolous Pink--I hope that wasn't too illegal.

Frivolous Pink is now available at Home Deport in Silicon Valley, CA. I do agree that the
scent is nice.
