I first obtained Hi from Miniature Plant Kingdom quite a few years ago. I grew the Pedro Dot micro mini, Si, and as this is quite like a single petaled version of that rose, and since the word "si" means "yes" in Spanish, and Si is a Spanish bred rose, and "hi" means "yes" in Japanese, I theorized in an article that the rose may be Japanese and named to be a pun on Si. Laurie Chaffin, of Pixie Treasures miniature rose nursery, wrote me to say what an interesting thought that was, but it was incorrect.

Gene Strawn bred some very nice miniatures and introduced quite a few of them through Pixie Treasures. "Hi" was a rose he didn't think would be commercial at that time, and he knew how partial Dorothy Crallie, Laurie's Mother, was to single roses, so he gave it to her. She grew a flat of the little, un named rose for years on the end of one of the nursery tables. Each morning, Dorothy would walk around the end of that table and address the flat with, "Hi!".
