'Christine Hélène' rose Reviews & Comments

I have been sticking cuttings in the ground when pruning, and Christine Hélène is one that roots readily and blooms in its second year while still in the "wobbly stick" phase.

This is NOT a small rambler, and the thornlessness of the canes (while much appreciated) does not make this rose harmless at all. The prickles beneath the leaves are razor-sharp, and she likes to grab passers-by. Don't plant this rose at an entrance or a passageway; plant it somewhere you'd like to keep something/somebody out (could work well against deer and stray dogs). Still I cannot recommend this rose enough if you have the space for it (3m high, 3m wide, 1m deep in my garden, being 3 years old). It is super healthy under huge infection pressure in my garden (I don't spray). It's constantly covered with huge clusters of butter-yellow and white blooms, with a pleasing sweet fragrance. The bees LOVE it, it is always buzzing. No need to dead-head, so you can have hips and flowers at the same time. You want to prune it with a machete.

Looks like a great parent for breeding yellow-flowered hardy ramblers.

Is this really hardy to zone 2b?

Very unlikely. Rosa helenae is not fully hardy in southern Finland inland (Z4) and the suggested pollen parent Ghislaine de Feligonde is not at all hardy here. My guess would be Z5 for this rose.
