Emden is a town in northern Germany. However, the name of the rose is probably derived from SMS Emden, a cruiser of the German Navy in World War I. SMS Emden was stationed in Tsingtao in China. When War started, SMS Emden sunk a number of ships in the Indian Ocean. On November 9, 1914 she was severely damaged in a sea battle with the cruiser HMAS Sydney near the Cocos Island and had to be abandoned.
