Bred by Unknown Japanese Breeder(s) (Japan, before 1862).
Discovered by Robert Fortune (United Kingdom, circa 1862).

Hybrid Multiflora, Species / Wild, Understock.  

White, light yellow shading, ages to salmon-pink .  Mild, tea rose fragrance.  up to 5 petals.  Small, single (4-8 petals), in large clusters bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  Small, rounded buds.  

Armed with thorns / prickles, climbing, well-branched.  Small, light green foliage.  5 to 9 leaflets.  

Height: up to 6'7" (up to 200cm).  

USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).  Vigorous.  

Japan

Rosa intermedia Carr. was seen as a synonym of Rosa multiflora Thunb. (see Crépin's texts and Curtis's Botanical Magazine 1890). However, according to The Plant List, this is an unresolved taxon.
Carrière later in 1876 set his Rosa intermedia as a synonym of Rosa polyantha.
The introduction of the single Polyantha into Europe is still unclear. As introducers are mentioned:
- Robert Fortune who was in Japan 1860-1862
- Francisque Coignet in 1862, but he was in Japan only 1867-77.
Also Philippe von Siebold had R. polyantha on sale in his nursery in Leiden by 1867.
