'Princess Alexandra of Kent' rose Reviews & Comments

This rose stunned me! I grew three from plants I got at a local nursery and 2 I got as bare roots from DA ( I placed those in large containers. The 3 plants grew huge in the ground. The bare roots ( which were very big to begin with did not grow as large. All 5 bloomed endlessly. Almost immediately, I couldn’t believe it! I live in zone 6a and we had a month of rain and it really didn’t affect these Roses. They only get 4hrs of morning sun. They must have had a lot of good energy from the previous year. I hope they like our winters. I will give an update in June 22. Hope it is good. Summer of 22, very hot and drought conditions, oddly not a great 2nd flush. August now, and experiencing black spots. I have defoliated 2/5 plants. Already seeing new growth. Noticed during defoliation and pruning that canes were dark inside. I will post photos.

Please, dear growers of this rose, is it strong enough to self support (not need any staking)? Thanks.

I gave mine support because it grew unexpectedly tall and I was afraid it might grab my husband while mowing the lawn !

big blooms, wonderful petal count, very well-formed blossoms, pink round and fat petals on the outer circles, with deep pink small petals stuffed inside. the flower really looks charming.
yet the smell is disappointing, it's not strong but a little bit harsh(hard to describe....), and the smell is not pleasing, the fragrance is medium and sour-toned
PAOK is remontant

For own-root Princess Alexandra of Kent: I was a bit concerned about PAK being the smallest in Austin catalog, even smaller than Sharifa Asma (less than 1 foot in my zone 5a), and smaller than Jude the Obscure (died 4 times as own-root in my zone 5a winter). I did some checking in Rose forum, and found a person in zone 5b listed PAK as her weakest grower among 20+ Austins, and another person in zone 5b reported her own-root PAK died last winter.
Good news: Kelly in zone 4b, MN (alkaline clay), notified me that her PAK grafted on Dr. Huey survived her winter, and looks big & healthy in spring. Another friend in zone 5a, WA & alkaline clay e-mailed me this info.: "Princess A of K, own root, 3rd yr., is finally giving me tons of blooms. Up until now, she has only had one or two blooms a flush. Now, she is covered in blooms and buds and the pause between flushes isn’t as long as it was last year. Her color is stronger than her first 2 years. The scent isn’t very strong for me. It has had strong upright canes from the beginning." Her own-root died after 4 years.
