Given Vintage's research into this rose's provenance (see References), it sems likely that this HP is 'Margaret Dickson', and a merge with the 'Margaret Dickson' has been requested. If anyone has comments to make supporting or opposing this move, they will be appreciated.

Apparently, there was a listing in 'The Rose' from 2004 (and maybe other years) of found roses that can be exhibited, and the equation of "Kern White HP" and 'Margaret Dickson' has been made. Does anyone have any more information about this ID?

The "Kern White" in my garden is very like the description of 'Margaret Dickson', from the long canes to the pinkish tint in the white flowers.

This rose, whatever its' correct name is completely hardy in my zone 5a garden with no protection needed. It is sheltered from the North and there is some dieback and pruning needed in Spring, but on the whole I would call this a good selection for cold zoners, especially if you are looking for well formed cutting roses. It can live very nicely at the back of a border, with smaller shrubs in front of it.

It seems like a likely ID if the descriptions of Margaret Dickson in the references section "fit" your rose. It does seem that Vintage made the equation, since I saw one of their last order forms online using both names: "Kern White H.P." (Margaret Dickson).

I wonder if anyone has one of their last catalogs, and can say if "KWHP" (MD) was listed in any of their actual catalogs with any explanation of how the ID was made, or by whom?

I added a few references about 'Margaret Dickson' yesterday, and there's no doubt that she was grown in the U.S., and was reasonably popular here.

Thanks for the info,
Virginia

From The Vintage Gardens Book of Roses, 2006

"Kern White HP"
"Very large flowers of off-white shading slightly pink at the centers. Very clean, scrolled, and elegant; long lasting flowers. ...We are fairly certain that this is Margaret Dickson, once offered by Joseph Kern."

Thanks, Nastarana... I have added what you posted to the references for "KWHP". If you could also supply a page number, that would also be nice to have.

A late-in-the-day peek in at HelpMeFind. I note the actual Vintage reference also contains a provenance of Edinger, Kern. HelpMeFind also has a file "Edinger White HP". Are these two foundling roses, "Kern White" and "Edinger White HP" the same? Should they be merged (for starters)?

This picture was taken on October 6, 2005. This was listed as spring blooming only when it bought it. It appears to like to bloom in the fall also. The best hybrid perpetual I have found for my climate.
