Paddy McGredy (MACpa) Cluster-flowered floribunda. Parentage: 'Spartan' x 'Tzigane'. Northern Ireland 1962. Description and cultivation... Large, fragrant, hybrid tea-shaped, globular blooms, grow singly or in large clusters, and are coloured rose pink to carmine. This rose attracted much attention when it was introduced because of its felicitous combination of hybrid tea and floribunda characteristics... susceptible to black spot...

Some  people call it deep pink; I have yet to learn where pink ends and red begins. Is pink not another way of saying light red? If so, surely deep pink equals red? It is convenient, I think, to use the agreeable words 'rose red' to bridge the gap.    'Paddy McGredy'  came  from Sam  McGredy  in 1962, its parents 'Spartan' x Tzigane' ; the latter was a red and yellow Hybrid Tea descended from 'Peace', and assured of a short life in a cold climate by its thick, soft pith. Bad parents can have good  children, which is fortunate for 'Paddy McGredy',  who had the rust-laden 'Fashion' as a grandmother.    With 'Paddy   McGredy'   came  the realization that Floribundas were able to produce flowers as large as Hybrid Teas....

A noticeable trend in recent years has been the crossing of the hybrid teas with the floribundas; this has resulted in many roses of intermediate type, usually have smaller flowers than the hybrid teas but of better form than the floribundas. These have been saddled with the rather unwieldly appellation of floribundas, HT type. Some of them (e.g. 'Paddy McGredy') have flowers as large as those of many of the hybrid teas....
