Margaret Furness.  Tea, Noisette and China Mislabels in Australia
What is sold here as Papillon is incorrect. It matches the Beauté Inconstante seen in overseas collections, and is the same as “Mrs Heggie’s Red Tea” from ‘Almerta’. A fickle beauty varying in colour with the season.

PAPILLON ["DUKE OF YORK"] Cl. tea (tea), good reliable rebloom, outstanding fragrance, habit: abundance of basal canes with branching laterals; Soft apricot-pink flowers take on flame tones and deep shades as they age and have a strong Tea fragrance. This rose is shrubby, but produces moderately long climbing canes in the autumn; as suggested by those who first grew it, it is well suited to a pillar where it will flower from top to bottom. ...The rose we grew for some years as PAPILLON is larger of flower and of habit, with big globular blooms. We list that rose here as "Huntington Papillon" in recognition of where it was "identified".

'Papillon' (Photo p.171) G. Nabonnand, 1881.
Habit : shrub of approx. 1 m to 1,50 m ; it attains 3 m or more if it is espaliered. Foliage : dark green. Bloom : medium, semi-double, very curious form, petals rolled into pointed horns , very visible stamens ; solitary or in clusters. Good repeat. Colour : "coppery dawn-pink, revers vivid pink" according to the catalogues of the breeder. Fragrance very mild. It is effectively thinking of butterflies that Nabonnand baptised this rose: "Flowers having, by their form and disposition, the aspect of numerous butterflies sitting on the plant"he wrote. ....Not to be confused with the China rose of the same name (Dubourg, approx. 1826).

'Papillon' HT. Origin unknown. Breeder: Nabonnand, 1881. Height: 3 to 4 m. Recurrent. Semi-double, mild fragrance, sun, limited hardiness. ...The flowers are semi-double, coppery dawn-pink and vivid pink on the reverse, has wide petals, tubed and a little asymmetrical which gives it a fantastical appearance. They sit like butterflies on a climber full of vigour, generous and repeating, which blooms among the first...but also among the last.
