FANNY BIAS Descemet, before 1811. Synonyms: Athalie (Baltet). Duchesse de Reggio (Prévost, Sommesson). La plus belle (Descemet).Habit: Upright shrub, without prickes, but with bristles. Foliage: medium green, elliptical leaflets. Bloom: solitary, or in pairs; quite large, double, flat; some stamens visible; small tender green eye; long foliaceous sepals. Colour: pale pink, pinkish white on the periphery. Fragrance; Weak....
Vibert presents this variety! as obtained in 1818 and commercialized the following year. In fact, the following comments of Pirolle...dated 1826...show that ..this variety originates from Descemet...and existed before 1811.: "Athalie. This magnificent rose is as own-root since 15 years (thus 1811) at M. Sommesson, who named it "Duchesse de Reggio". ....the merchant (Vibert) who collected the non-sold rest....gave it the name "Fanny Bias" in the catalogues where he since offers them to the public".
Fanny Bias (1785-1825)...was a celebrated dancer of the Empire [period]; she became lead dancer at the Opera in 1817; the year preceding that when [Vibert] pretended having obtained this variety. The synonym "Duchesse de Reggio" ...was used by Prévost and Sommesson : it should not confused with the Hybrid China "Duchesse de Reggio" obtained by Laffay, nowadays extinct. Besides, the synonym "Athalie", used particularly by Pépinières Baltet, should not be confused with the gallica "Athalie" which Vibert obtained in 1823 (also extinct).....
Contemporary anglo-saxon literature...considers "Gloire de France" as synonym of "Fanny Bias". This is an error. "Gloire de France" is....quite similar, but should not be confused with it.
