Polstjarnan is 100% cane hardy in zone 2b, it is the most reliably cane hardy climber I know of. It gets very large, quite quickly. It has a light, pleasant scent.

I never had roses but need a thorny climber to cover horizontally across the top of my privacy fence to discourage people jumping over. I am zone 5 (northern Ohio) and need a HARDY climber that is DISEASE resistant and grows very long so I can train along the fenceline. I just don't want to be dusting and spraying constantly like I see my Grandma do with her roses for mildew and blackspot, etc. Is Polestar the one for me? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Altissamo-- the only cilmbing rose that Barry Coate, my UCSC hort instructor reccomends. It has a very long lasting bloom-single but large and a velvety rich red with yellow stamens. No fuss, plenty of color and dependable.

You might want to take a look at 'Antique '89'. It does have a reputation of being well-armed with thorns and was bred by Kordes.

Polestar has viscious thorns and thrives in Zone 3 (Calgary). I have seen it grow up past the eaves of a house here. No disease problems that I have seen.
