'Madame Stuart Low' peony References
Article (magazine)  (Jan 1955)  Page(s) 13.

As the century drew to a close, the references became fewer and fewer. When the old growers died, the desire for large collections of Chinese tree peonies apparently died with thep:l. The varieties they had grown with the possible exception of P. papaveracea had full double flowers. They were so heavy that the stems could not properly support them, with the result that many of the flowers were hidden under the foliage. In addition to the varieties already mentioned, there were being grown under European names, one white, 'Lambertinae'; a few very beautiful salmon pinks and rose pinks such as 'Carolina d'Italie,' 'Comte de Rambuteau,' 'Jeanne d'Arc,' 'Marquis de Clapiers,' 'Mme. Stuart Low,' and 'Mme. Victor Gillier'; a gorgeous rose red or cherry red, 'Reine Elizabeth'; and a fine deep purple, 'Souv. de Ducher.'

New Tree Pæonies.
Mrs. Stuart Low.—The flowers of this variety are of great size, with the petals large and not crowded. The outer ones are white, the others of a soft blush-pink hue, except the tips which are white, and the two hues exhibit a delicate blending.
Triomphe de Milan.—The whole of the petals are of a soft rose hue; the inner ones are much narrower, and much cut up into deep segments. The flowers are somewhat different in character from those of the above variety. Both had been grown in pots, and slightly forced. They were exhibited by Messrs. J. Laing & Sons, Forest Hill, at the Royal Botanic Society's spring show on the 23rd of April, who received Floricultural Certificates for them.

The Tree Pæony.
...For the last twenty years or longer we have had to look to our French neighbours for new sorts of Tree Pæony, for since they have taken the work of hybridising and raising seedlings in hand they have supplied us with all the finest sorts.  Until now the list is long- too long, in fact, for names are given where very shadowy differences exist.
