'Erinnerung an Brod' rose References
Article (newsletter) (Jul 2012) Page(s) 32-33. Erinnerung an Brod has seduced many notable rosarians, including Charles Quest-Ritson. In his book ‘Climbing Roses of the World’ he waxes poetical in his description of the deep maroon-violet flowers. What I find fascinating is that this rose appears under the names of many other roses, such as Souvenir d’Alphonse Lavallée, recently reintroduced from Europe to America. And we have moreover received some distinctive imposters from Europe under the name Erinnering an Brod, including an apricot flowered rose of Setigera appearance.

Book (1997) Page(s) XIX. 3. Erinnerung an Brod: Hybrid between R. rubifolia and the Portland Rose, Genie de Chateaubriand. It already shows as a shrub the tendency to overhang; grafted high and in good moist soil, it makes up to 2 m long annual shoots, which although thick, but covered with flowers, hang down to the ground. In not too dry summer and soil the large, densely filled, flat flower is almost purplish-blue or violet-blue, usually with a dark red heart, and it is the only rose in this color that sometimes approaches a true blue, it surpasses Reine des Violettes, Violacea, Dr. Hogg and others of similar color. Viewed a few meters away, sometimes an especially dark colored flower appears almost black.

Supposed to be a hybrid between Rosa setigera (R. rubifolia) and 'Génie de Châteaubriand'. [Thomas thinks] it doubtful whether there is really any R. setigera in its parentage; it is a fairly typical Hybrid Perpetual... any shade from cerise-pink to dark crimson-purple is found in each flower...
