“Pikkala” (centifolia x gallica)? “Pikkala” resembles the centifolia x gallica cross ’Soleil Brilliant’ or ’Hypathia’, which was raised prior to 1790 in the Netherlands. It was first found on the estate of Pikkala Manor, Southern Finland, and has later turned up in a few other, scattered localities in Southern Finland. It shares gallica and centifolia features. “Pikkala” suckers into a thicket and flowers rather late in the season, from about mid-July. The very double, strongly scented flowers are initially rounded in shape, strong aniline pink with paler marbling, and later open wider to display golden stamens. The pearshaped hips are set abundantly.
