Had a very dry summer this year, and instead of the usual autumn change of leaf color, it just got rust! Still happily blooming, though- and the red is beautifully rich. The first time I've seen disease on this plant, and the first time I've seen rust on my roses here on the East Coast. From April to October it's completely spotless.

Water stress reduces resistances.
I've never seen it mildew but it will succumb rust in certain climates when under stress.
It usually bounces right back.

Note: When dissecting blooms that are unusually double, it appears that the male parts have been converted to petals, and there are few to no male parts remaining.

Completely clean and very strong grower in the NYC region. Very good red color, not much fragrance. Although single, the petals are of strong substance and hold color well. In the autumn, it bears many very fleshy orange hips, too: they look good enough to eat, honestly.
(I also believe this is also the only rose named for a notable figure of the Eastern Orthodox Church, although not commercialized under that name. )
