Swarthmore, HT. (Meilland, 1963) [('Kordes' Sondermeldung' x 'Rouge Meilland') x 'Mme. A. Meilland]. A well known English amateur grower sent me budwood under this name in 1963 but it proved to be 'Scarlet Royal'. Unfortunately a few of these plants were distributed as 'Swarthmore' and blooms have appeared on show benches. 'Swarthmore' has big, very sharply pointed, deep pink blooms with about 50 petals. Strong perfume. Vigorous upright growth. Strangely it has never been distributed other than in the U.S.A. until recently, when eyes have been obtained from the U.S.A., where it is regarded as a top ranking show rose. One of my plants has a climbing mutation.

Swarthmore HT. (Meilland, 1964) The colour may not appeal to everyone - some may regard it as stale or blued. It is described as "fuschia-red with medium purple-red edges". The flowers are beautifully formed and if it can get past the prejudices of some judges, it will be a very fine show rose. The blooms last particularly well. The plants are tall and vigorous.
