'Fairest One' rose Reviews & Comments

This rose is large and beautiful, blooming mostly singly on fairly long stems, but weak-necked to some degree. Nevertheless, it's one of my favorites!

Gosh I am so sick and disgusted with J&P doing the name change game. It is so confusing to the general public at large and I am sure that many times customers of J&P have inadvertantly ordered a rose they already had i their garden just because they saw a different name. Thank goodness for the "registered name ex. "jacsomed" so that experienced rosarians can figure it out and not get taken to the cleaners by J&P. Sometimes I can understand it like when Disney pulls their license to let J&P use the maidens names. But, why in the world would you change and oldie like Spellbound to "Mesmerized" or Cesar E. Chavez to "Beloved"?? Rose name changes like that make no sense whatsoever to my way of thinking. Another culprit is Kordes who likes to re-use the same name of a rose they bred 10 years ago on another new rose just coming out so now you have two Kordes roses with the same popular name. Folks, this is a bunch of crap and these rose vendors need to be held accountable for it and told to stop this crap before they gum up the whole works until nobody knows one rose from another. Just my own opinion!!

I got an email from Jackson & Perkins customer service today that said they are now selling this rose under the name "Merlot." Aargh!

And there I was, thinking that roses weren't supposed to be named after other plants...

Those rules don't apply to the commercial breeders. That is because the "official" name is the code name, here JACsomed. Then they can market the plant under whatever name they want, including other plant names if it suits their fancy.

We've added this name. As much as we hate having nursery-assigned synonyms like this we feel HMF ultimately serves a very useful purpose in sorting out which rose is which.

Please add this information to the 'lineage' tab for two new J&P roses: "Love's Kiss" (JANonceu) Gemini x #83-05052* "Fairest One" (JACspmed) ((Honor x Kardinal) x #6003*)) x Rosie O'Donnell
* #83-05052 and #6003 are both unnamed red hybrid tea seedlings currently being used by Jackson & Perkins in their breeding program.
This information was given to me on February 22, 2010, by Dr. Keith Zary, the Head of New Product Developement at Jackson and Perkins. I therefore personally guarantee that this information is true and accurate. R.M. of S.F., CA

We have updated 'Love's Kiss' with the parentage provided but we need some clarification before updating 'Fairest One'.
You list the breeder code for 'Fairest One' as JACspmed which is not what we currently have recorded. Please confirm this is correct.
You list 'Kardinal' as a parent but we have multiple rose listings for the name Kardinal. Can you provide the breeder or year bred.
Thanks !

Sorry! In my haste, I indicated that the code name for Fairest One to be JACspmed, which of course is wrong. The code name is indeed JACsomed. The Kardinal used in the breeding of this rose is Kardinal (1985) KORlingo. Please make the necessary corrections/adjustments. Thank you! Bob Marker, San Francisco, CA
