Hi,
I have encountered a problem. I have a seedling listed as 112-04-04 on HMF and I have submitted its registration to the rose registrar. When I attempt to add the official name of this variety, 'Etienne', it won't allow me, stating that a rose by this name already exists ('Rose Etienne', by Vibert). Can someone please help me remedy this problem? Thanks.

Paul,
When a rose name is a duplicate you must add the class, breeder and year bred enclosed in parenthesis to make the name unique. This only applies to duplicate rose names and should not be used otherwise. Search any common rose name for an example, e.g. 'Peace'.

I don't understand how that information helps me to add an official registration name. :-/

This is a limitation of HMF and duplicate names. The name will need to be entered as 'Etienne (gallica, Barden 2004)' otherwise when it's listed on HMF by name only people will not know which 'Etienne' it is. Name wise, the information enclosed in parenthesis is ignored.
We understand your point about your rose being the registered version of 'Etienne' but that does not change the fact your rose will be confused with the other 'Etienne'. When a site guest clicks on your rose to view the details they will see that yours is the registered use of the name.
Your post does raise an interesting point of removing the information within parenthesis when the rose is included on your list of roses bred as it is of course not necessary there. Please also note the parenthesis enclosed information is removed on your plant's page as it's not needed there either.
Whenever we have the duplication of a name, each duplicate name is changed to reflect the additional details to make it unique. You'll note we have already updated the other 'Etienne'.
