To celebrate the 1999 International year of Older Persons, Western Australia’s Office of Seniors Interests obtained the naming rights to a new rose, locally developed by Dr. Peter Gibson, a retired cardio-thoracic surgeon. A state-wide competition was run to find a suitable name for this new rose, which is deep pink, with bluish tints and a yellow throat. The name had to reflect the theme of the international year “A Western Australia for all ages”. A competition was launched with a planting ceremony in Perth’s Queen’s Gardens on a sunny autumn morning in April. Bushes of the new rose were planted in a specially prepared feature bed by the Hon. Rhonda Parker MLA, the WA Minister for Seniors, and by Dr. Peter Nattrass, Lord Mayor of the City of Perth, which administers and maintains Queen’s Gardens. Among those attending the launch was 100 years old Mrs. Emily Tompkins, who shared her childhood recollections of the development of Queen’s Gardens. Peter Gibson was also present at the planting ceremony and received many congratulations on his fine new rose, bred from a ‘Queen Elizabeth’ seedling crossed with ‘Julia’s Rose’….. Royalties from the sale of ‘Glorious Heritage’ will go towards the Centre for Positive Ageing, which is to be established to research issues of ageing in co-operation with WA universities.
