'La Carmen' rose Reviews & Comments

Reading the descriptions of La Carmen I note that all of them use the term "aniline pink". Obviously each of the descriptions compiled by you copied the original Italian one contributed by the introducer (Bonfiglioli) and each dutifully repeats the unusual colour definition. But what colour is it? A mauve-pink?

According to Repertoire de Couleurs 1905 rosa d'anilina (italian) is synonym of fuchsine (french), lilac purple, anilin red, fucsine red (english).

What I should have said, of course, is that the description reveals the uncritical way that rose reviews were compiled in this period of poor photographs and difficulty of travel. Bonfiglioli's original description is uncritically accepted by the Journal des Roses etc. and then copied by others. This is not always so obvious as here.
