Bred by Samuel Darragh (1932-2019) McGredy IV (1959).
Introduced in United Kingdom by Samuel McGredy and Son, Nurserymen (Northern Ireland) in 1962 as 'Uncle Walter'.
Introduced in Australia by Brundrett's The Rose People in 1964 as 'Uncle Walter'.
Introduced in France by NIRP International in 1964 as 'Oncle Walter'.

Climber, Hybrid Tea, Shrub.  

Crimson - scarlet.  Strongly veined foliage.  None to mild fragrance.  30 to 35 petals.  Average diameter 5".  Very large, full (26-40 petals), cluster-flowered, in small clusters, high-centered bloom form.  Blooms in flushes throughout the season.  Long buds.  

Tall.  Bronze-green, leathery foliage.  

Height: 5' to 14' (150 to 425cm).  Width: up to 4' (up to 120cm).

USDA zone 7b and warmer.  Can be used for cut flower or garden.  Vigorous.  Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that.  Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .
