I live in zone 9a in the Gulf Coast, and I’ve had Puppy Kisses in a pot for a year. It’s not the kind of rose I usually gravitate toward. I prefer large, full blossoms in pastels, but my little daughter likes singles and bold colors, so I got it to go near to her playhouse. I’m glad I did. It smells amazing! It has a wonderful, warm, rich, sweet smell, with a finish of cinnamon. It’s had 4-6 flushes this year of 1-2 blossoms each, which is not bad for a little baby rose.
The sun is harsh here in zone 9a, but this rose is in a gentle spot, with dappled morning sun and bright afternoon shade, so I can’t say anything about how tough it is.
It got black spot in summer. I mostly grow disease-resistant roses, and they all get black spot in summer. This one wasn’t the best or the worst of the bunch.
It’s growing tall and skinny now, like a tea rose. I’ll be curious to see if that is its mature shape in this climate, or if it’s just going through a phase. Too early to say. The thorns are small and not too terrible.
But the smell! Oh, the smell!
Update, December 2021: I planted it in slightly deeper part-shade than it had been in its pot, and it languished all year, so it’s not a super-shade-tolerant rose. I miss the fragrance, so I’m going to move it to a nicer spot.
