Class:
Hybrid Multiflora, Shrub.
Bloom:
Pink. Pine fragrance. 5 petals. Average diameter 1.25". Small, single (4-8 petals), in large clusters bloom form. Prolific, once-blooming spring or summer. Small, glandular sepals buds.
Habit:
Arching, armed with thorns / prickles, lax. Small, semi-glossy, dark green, fragrant, wrinkled (rugose) foliage.
Growing:
Can be used for shrub. Very vigorous. can be grown as a shrub. rain tolerant. Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant, very blackspot resistant., very mildew resistant, very rust resistant. Needs little care; relatively disease-free and quite hardy. Prune after flowering is finished. Prune lightly or not at all.
Breeder's notes:
Very fertile. Large trusses of pinky/purple flowers followed by a large display of small multiflora-like hips. Seed germinates easily. Foliage is fragrant and rugose in texture; a feature it inherited from its pollen parent. Flowers are short lived in a typical multiflora style. Super thorny. Strikes like a weed!
"Sweet Flora" is unregistered. The name is a 'pet name' for the seedling derived from 'Sweet Chariot' and R. multiflora.
EDIT 1, 30th July, 2011: After one year of growth 'Sweet Flora' is 5ft high and wide with long arching canes typical of medium sized hybrid musks. It is currently leafless and in the middle of winter. Shoots are forming along the arching canes now and I anticipate a great display this year in about 2 months.
EDIT 2, 15th Sept., 2011: Touchdowns root with ease as one would expect with its multiflora-based Parents.
EDIT 3, 9th Nov. 2011: Flowers typically multiflora. Flowers short lived! Open over a very long period of time rather than an all-out one-off flush.
