'Huria Matenga' rose References
Book (1969) p55. J Samuels. New Rose Garden at Broadgreen, Nelson. ....the Mayor declared the new garden open To mark the occasion he placed the nameplate in a small circular bed of the new Nelson-raised Hybrid Tea sport of 'Mrs. Sam McGredy' which he had just named 'Huria Matenga'. This is a golden-apricot rose which originated in a Nelson park, and this fact gives significance to the variety although it is rather unlikely to achieve notability further afield. The name recalls the wrecking, in the early hours of the morning of 4th September, 1863, of the ship Delaware off the Nelson coast, following which Huria Matenga (Julia Martin) was honoured for her heroism in the rescue of the crew.
p59 ibid. Facing the house are six circular beds featuring ... and 'Huria Matenga' wth one dozen to each bed.
