Don Sheppard. Final Analysis 1986-87
'Marama' Simpson 1980; creamy-buff; 35-40 petals; 22 reports; 34 bushes; 1-11 years; 1.4m; 7.6 rating. One of our old friend, John Simpson's, early releases; still receiving reports from Nola and others in the mid North Island. Healthy, with dark green foliage. It produces blooms of classic form for the exhibitor. But alas, 'Marama' has her "clay feet" too - poor petal texture, which cannot stand any rain and slow repeat. Exhibitors say she is worth growing, in spite of these weaknesses.

'Marama'. Simpson 1980. 'Lady Helen' x Seedling. 40 petals, cream-buff. 5 reports, 6 years, 1.4m. 7.6 rating. This exhibition type bloom needs warm, fine weather, otherwise it balls, as the petal texture is very thin. It holds its form well; repeat is slowish; there is a slight fragrance and the bush is healthy in all areas. A good garden and show rose.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1984-85 Season.
'Marama' Simpson 1980 ('Lady Helen' x Seedling) 45 petals, cream, 4 reports, 8 bushes, 3-8 years, 1.5 metres average height. 7.3 rating. Not widely grown evidently, in fact peculiar to the North Island. Rotorua and Franklin say the blooms ball easily in rain; Palmerston North, two reports, say roughly the same too, as the petals are a little thin. It evidently resents hard pruning. The bush has a good growth habit and is healthy. However Rotorua is not happy with her plant. The bloom repeat is good all four report, and there is a good fruity perfume.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses in 1983-84 Season.
'Marama'. Simpson 1980 ('Lady Helen' x seedling) 5 reports, 7 bushes over 3 years, 1 metre, 7.2 rating. Creamy buff. Manawatu report that it has 25 petals and should be more widely grown as it is excellent, healthy too, but blooms can damage in rain. Southland says it balled this year but growth is excellent. Rotorua reports balling, unusual colour and sprays leave marks. Central Taranaki report it to suffer rain damage, lovely exhibition type blooms on a bushy healthy plant. A good fine weather rose evidently.

Don Sheppard. Review of Newer Roses for 1982-83 Season.
'Marama'. Simpson 1980 (Breeding not given). Creamy buff. 2 reports; 1 year; 3 feet. NRS rating 8.0. Grown in Manawatu and Rotorua only so far, this creamy to white buff rose is slow to open and holds its classic form for days and days on the bush. It repeats well and is weather resistant. The bush grows strongly to reach a medium height only. Looks as if 'Marama' could be a good one for the show bench.

Nola Simpson. Comments on Some New Ones.
'Marama'. - HT: Cream roses have always been scarce and those that are available do not grow very well. This rose satisfies these demands, exhibition cream borne on strong growing healthy bushes that have an ideal habit and flowers readily produced. The substance of the petals could be improved. Fragrant.

Nola Simpson. The Trial Grounds 1980-81. There are quite a number of John's seedlings entered in this trial, mainly to make up the numbers, but there are two HTs worth mentioning..... the other HT is 'Marama', a large cream, good exhibition shape. This rose has the best habit and health of any HT in the trial, but somehow pale coloured roses seldom get their just rewards.
