Height Tall. Garden 7.5. Exhibition 5.3. Health 7.7 (very good). Fragrance 8.2 (heavy). A good climber that is almost a yellow version of 'Compassion'. The variety has a nice sweet scent and is extremely fragrant. It grows very well, has plenty of blooms throughout the season, is vigorous and needs a lot of space. It is very healthy but may occasionally have some black spot, it repeats well and blooms are good for picking

Book (2010) Page(s) 16. Includes photo(s). From Colleen O'Connell: My father, Jack Hume, who had been Superintendent of Horticulture in Palmerston North and Districts for 30 years until he retired and then worked for the Potato Board, had always been a passionate rose grower. Among the rose bushes he planted in our Bridge Street section in Bulls was my favourite, 'Compassion'. Ten years or so ago I was blown away to find a cream bud on my pink flowering rose bush. According to Nola Simpson, 'Compassion' has a tendency to throw sports. Will this one be any different? Budwood was supplied to John Ford who raised the rose to the stage where it was accepted in the Trial Grounds in Palmerston North. Sadly it received no award, but Nola Simpson felt this climber had potential, especially since it had a strong fragrance, was robust and disease resistant. She approached Matthews Nursery, Wanganui, to market the cream beauty. Our family decided to honour my father by naming the new rose 'Jack Hume'. We trust this new variety will give pleasure to many folk, from its stunning appearance and its lovely scent.
