It was the grandchildren's idea to pay tribute to their 81-year-old grandmother, who thought it was "her colour". "When we asked her permission, she loved it and carried the rose around for ages, sniffing and admiring it," Somerfield said. His win was announced at the New Zealand Rose Society's international rose trial grounds at the Victoria Esplanade in Palmerston North on Sunday. Somerfield said the new rose was a seedling crossed by hand pollination with "Betty Harkness", an orange rose.

Hybrid Tea, bred by Rob Somerfield, Glenavon Roses. Trial No. 5034. This unusual coloured rose attracted my attention early on in the piece, it seemed neither a true red nor a purple but somewhere in between. The large flat romantic type HT blooms were quite prolific on a sturdy, plant with excellent habit, dark glossy foliage that offset the colour of the blooms well. A few issues came to light over the two years, the first was the flowers tended to burn and fade in the high UV light of the spring and was subject to rust and a bit of blackspot. In saying that, I am looking forward to this rose being released and growing in the garden.
