'Bubble Bath' rose Reviews & Comments

For all who are asking about "Matson" - here goes:
George Matson was a pantomime artist on the American and French stage in the 1960s. He lived in Santa Rosa, CA in the 1980s to 2000s and was a gardener who revived and created old-style gardens and who used old roses extensively in his gardens.
"Bubble Bath" was his name for a foundling that he discovered in the garden of some friends in Sonoma County. It appeared to be a cross between the roses Kathleen (HM) and Cli. Cecile Brunner (Pol) both of which grew in that garden.
The above is from a close personal friend of Mr Matson's and an avid rose gardener. I was going MAD trying to find out - WHO WAS MATSON?! I lucked upon a connection and he graciously replied to my inquiry.

Bubble Bath is quite a site in May at the Berkeley Rose Garden. There are several plants scrambling up a fence and the smother themselves in flowers. Really pretty.

I have had this bush for a year, growing on it's own root. It is in a shady spot and has not bloomed much. I will move it to a sunnier location and see what happens. The blooms it has produced are small and white, with no noticeable fragrance. Perhaps hot dry inland Ca. effects it that way. So far not impressed, but I am beginning to wonder if my location is not the best for hybrid musk roses.

Both the Rogue Valley and Vintage descriptions of this rose indicate its fragrance is very strong. The Vintage description also quotes George Matson as stating that it "travels" on the air as well.

Fragrances of roses "travel" on the air usually only in areas of high humidity. Does Mr. Matson live in such an area?

I don't know about Mr. Matson, but I do (the blessing & curse of living on the ocean)! :)
