Second year update: This spring has been a disaster for Chios. Every single bloom from the spring flush has balled or been bull-nosed, and the plant is a mildew factory. I have been spraying weekly with a milk/potassium bicarbonate solution to try to keep it under control, but the mildew seems tenacious on this one.
I really thought a rose from a Greek island would have done better than this here in another Mediterranean island. Weather this spring has been rather less rainy than normal, although still humid air, but again I didn't think air humidity would be a problem for a rose from a Greek island.
I will continue to hope for an improvement since Chios is so lovely when it's good.

Hello, greek here as well, im in crete. This rose is my best performer. The leaves are spotless, and its full of buds. Some are about to bloom, might even be open tomorrow. Now, I didnt know what balling is, and I searched it, some of these symptoms do appear, so im kind of worried now. Some of the outer petals on the blooms are brownish, thats the main symptom im seeing in my plant.
But I think itll be fine, ill post pictures if they opens tomorrow or whenever they open. I will also comment here again and inform you about what's going on.

I hope Chios is doing well for you.
One year later she's absolutely wonderful here in Malta. I guess 2023 was just a bad year for her, and also perhaps a bit my fault.
This time I didn't prune her as hard as before, and made sure to give her LOTS of water, and she has been perfect.

It would be good to have a couple of photos of the “Chios Rose”. Perhaps a closeup of the bloom, and one of the whole bush?

Hi Patricia.For the moment this is the whole bush! Has some buds formed. Purchased as 1yr bareroot before
Christmas '21 , brought the pot indoors for this shot, before dawn Valentine's '22. ...

The ''Old centifollia from Chios'' or Chios Rose is a beautiful ,vigorous plant .Flowers are medium size,deep pink with strong damask fragrance.
Chios is a Greek Island in the Aegean Sea.It is the homeland of many Greek ship owners and sailors who always(even centuries b.c.) had active commerce and cultural trading with every known part of the world ,like most of Greeks.
So this plant may have come from anywhere at anytime it existed.
The most important historical event in Chios ,before its liberation in 1912 is the massacre of the population and burning of the island by the Ottomans revenging the Greek Revolution 1821, immortalized by E.Delacroix in his famous painting ''The massacre of Chios''
Chios island is also famous for the unicqe mastiche tree.

I ordered Chios as a bare root rose from Avramis at the beginning of the year.
She has really taken off and is covered in blooms. I added some pics, will add more as she grows.
This is a fantastic rose, with amazing fragrance.

Further to my previous comments, some observations:
Chios is, overall, a great rose. Fabulous blooms and scent. She has a big, very long flush in the spring/early summer and then reblooms but less profusely in the fall. The fall blooms are slightly darker in color.
Her blooms hold up well in the summer heat, although like most roses, she would probably enjoy a little more afternoon shade than I've given her, as the leaf tips got a little fried.
She doesn't blackspot or rust here, but now in the fall she is getting mildew.
This is only her first year, so hopefully her resistance will improve as she becomes more established.

Hello, Im also looking to buy this plant. Is this rose good for cuttings? Most of my family members get the chance to see my flowers when I have them in a vase at home, so cutting the roses from the plant is very important to me. Is it suitable?

I'm sorry I don't know! I've never cut Chios' flowers for a bouquet. It's her first year in my garden and I have just been enjoying the blooms on the bush, so I have no idea about how long they would last as cut flowers. She's beautiful though. If you get her I hope you will enjoy her!

Well, i dont really mind how long they last, Im mostly talking about if multiple blooms come out of a single stem, or if its like one long stem with one bloom. Im looking for the second kind. Theyre easier to deal with in arrangements and you dont have to sacrifice the blooms that come out on the side of the stem to make it straight. Kind of hard to explain

Chios does have some blooms in small clusters of 2-3 , but most have been singles at least in my experience.
