Three new rose varieties created by Matilda Ferrer. ...
The second of the roses presented was the 'Santiago Ramón y Cajal' rose, a tribute to who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1906 "for his contributions to the knowledge of the nervous system". Among the many contributions of Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) is the discovery of small protrusions on the dendrites of neurons that he called "thorns", because of their resemblance to those of the rose. It is now known that dendritic spines are key in the processes of memory, learning and cognition. The rose is a floribunda with medium-sized, orange-yellow roses, 4 to 11 petals, with dense, dark green foliage. The rose bush is compact in growth, reaching between 60 and 80 cm, it is resistant to diseases. It was awarded in Madrid as the best Spanish variety in 2019. It is a cross between the 'Fleurette' roses, a rose created in 1977 by Interplant in Holland, and the 'Golden Holstein' rose, a rose from in 1989, from the Kordes house in Germany, the two floribundas.
