The plant is completely prickle-free. The buds are nearly black when the sepals first open and the heavily velveted petals also appear black as they begin to unfurl. As the pigments mature, they develop into a deep, dark chocolate, illuminated with a brilliant orange under tone. Opened indoors, they remain virtually black velvet.
