Class:
China / Bengale, Hybrid Clinophylla, Shrub, Tea.
Bloom:
Ruby-red. Mild, spice fragrance. 25 to 30 petals. Average diameter 3". Medium, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary, fluted petals, old-fashioned bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Medium buds.
Habit:
Short, bushy, few or no prickles/thorns. Small, blue-green foliage.
Growing:
Disease susceptibility: disease resistant.
Breeder's notes:
This was a seedling Viru liked very much, he had high hopes for it and so grew it in a pot in our courtyard so he could constantly watch it. And as it had a few blooms practically throughout the year it have him much joy. The flowers are a clear bright red, the photographs don’t reflect that red purity. The blooms reminded him of our trip to Thailand many years back, in 2013, when we went chasing magnolias with our Thai magnolia specialist friend Thinakorn Komkris, when we went up to the border with Burma ( Myanmar) to the town of Chiang Rai. Burmese rubies, which are world famous, are brought in here, and there are expert gemstone polishers who take the dull red but pure rubies and polish them , both manually and with machinery, and soon, lo and behold the rubies sparkle with a clear deep indescribable pure red colour, ready to be bought by jewellers to be made into pendants, earrings, rings and necklaces. We were fascinated by the transformation , and when this seedling exhibited the same clear red colour Viru named it Ruby Pendant.
Prickles: small size, very few , triangular.
Foliage: small, blue-green, rather dainty and elegant
