Yeah it is manageable even in long term. In Greece i have met matured Mermaid specimens, kept as park bushes, chopping back last year's growth to half every year. Very charming big bushes there.

I have to wonder why. Easier to plant a single yellow that doesn't need so much work, for example Golden Wings or Windrush (if you can still find it).
And let Mermaid soar somewhere that has room for it.

Well Golden Wings looks nothing like Mermaid even when matured especially in a zone 9-10 climate, Mermaid is just unbeatable with the foliage etc. And those bushes are still huge, around 3-3,5 meters in height and 4 meters in width. Just less spider-ish after pruning :D
