Peter Harkness. An Update on Persica Hybrids.
....By now the Persica project was firing the imagination of mainstream breeders.....
The experience of Ronnie Rawlins illustrates the difficulties facing breeders, for after making more than 1000 crosses, he found only two seedlings that showed promise. Both come from, 'CHEWtingle' crossed with 'Scrivbell', a seedling which includes 'Flower Carpet' and 'Baby Love' in its lineage. Both repeat their flower.

Peter Harkness. An Update on Persica Hybrids.
....By now the Persica project was firing the imagination of mainstream breeders. Chris Warner crossed 'Tigris' with 'Baby Love' (raised from 'Sweet Magic') and was rewarded with as clutch of promising seedlings. One, with bronze flowers and a dark red eye, which flowered up to September, he codenamed CHEWtiggle. I think it was probably the first Persica to win an International award, at St. Albans in the 2001 Trials.

Peter Harkness. An Update on Persica Hybrids.
....In comparison with 'Tigris', 'Euphrates' had so far proved mulish and defeated everyone's breeding efforts. Jack suggested to the Dutch breeder Peter Ilsink that he might like to try his luck with it. Peter was highly successful, and in 1997 introduced Euphoria, a beautiful spreading shrub with sprays of yellow blooms rimmed orange-salmon. Peter has raised other beautiful Persicas in a variety of colours, single or semi-double, all with the 'magic eye'. His 'Babylonia' series is marketed in Japan.

....it was decided to introduce four of them, rather than see them perhaps lost for ever.
Euphrates [HARunique] (R. persica x 'Fairy Changeling') was pollinated in 1980, introduced in 1986, and carries small, single salmon rose flowers on bushy low plants. Scarlet 'eye' fading purplish.

Alissar; Princess of Phoenicia (HARsidon). The semi-double flowers are at first cream with red at the base of each petal, and as the petals expand the blooms deepen to reddish rose pink with burnished centres. The plant makes a handsome, leafy, open-branched shrub to 120 x 80cm (4 x 2 ft), and the delightful blooms bring to mind the fluttering of 14 butterflies. Parentage: 'The Times' x ['Dublin Bay' x (R. Persica seedling x 'Bright Smile') ]

Nigel Hawthorne [HARquibbler] (R. persica x 'Harvest Home') was pollinated in 1976, introduced in 1989, and has larger flowers than the others, up to 8cm (2.2in) across, in light salmon, opening wide to show brownish red petal bases. Its wrinkled leaves show the Rugosa influence of 'Harvest Home', a 'Scabrosa' seedling.
....the last named was at the request of the Royal National Rose Society, when Nigel, famous for his role as 'Sir Humphrey' in television's Yes, Minister', was invited to open the Society's Rose Festival, Peter asked what sort of roses he liked. "It's going to be a bit of a problem" Nigel replied, "because the kind of roses I like are unperfect roses". The unique Persica/Rugosa cross, imperfect in respect of its brief period of flower, delighted him.
