Book (1987) Page(s) 151. Dr. A. S. Thomas, Roses In The Cut-Flower Trade. Ninety per cent of the roses sold in the cut-flower trade are of patented cultivars, It is estimated that 200 million plants of those roses are grown world-wide, Two thirds of the blooms are produced in Europe in 3,000 hectares of glass-houses and polyhouses. At least 20 million of the bushes in these houses are replaced, on average, each year. Almost 5,000 million cut rose blooms are sold each year by florists in the E.E.C. Most of the cultivars grown for the purpose come from Meilland and Kordes. 'Sonia Meilland' retains its popularity as the rose with by far the biggest sales world-wide. Until 1974 'Baccara' held this distinction. Nowadays 'Visa' holds second place but only 15 million plants of it are sold annually as against about 40 million of 'Sonia Meilland'
