'Royal Show' rose References
Book (Dec 1998) Page(s) 525. Includes photo(s). Royal Show Large-flowered/Hybrid Tea. Gregory (UK) 1973... medium red, double flowers...
Book (1990) Page(s) 63. Ted Phillips, Rosanna, Victoria. Some of the Darker Reds and Others. Royal Show Big husky plant but too few flowers for my liking. Makes a poor bunch as flowers are too large and many stems are too short. Would make a top class specimen bloom.
Book (1981) Page(s) 120. Dr. A. S. Thomas, Victoria. Some New Ones. In 1973 I saw a new red rose in Walter Gregory's display garden and asked him about it. It was not registered or even named then. He had bought sole rights to it from Pat Dickson. Later I asked Pat why he had sold such a fine rose - eventually it was named 'Royal Show'. Pat replied: "Yes, perhaps I was a bit silly", and inferred that he had kept a better cultivar. This proved to be 'Big Chief'!.....Pat Dickson has led the world in recent years in raising red roses.
Book (1979) Page(s) 64. Dr. A. S. Thomas, Victoria. Some Recent Introductions. Royal Show A very fine red rose. Good growth.
Book (1978) Page(s) 122. Dr. A. S. Thomas, Victoria. Some Of The New Ones. Royal Show HT. (Dickson, 1973). 'Queen Elizabeth' x unnamed seedling, sold to and distributed by Gregory. Well-formed deep red dual purpose blooms on excellent plants.
Book (1976) Page(s) 97. Roy and Heather Rumsey, NSW. New Roses. Royal Show HT. (Dickson). Released last year, but again too late for inclusion in our article. This is a first rate red rose and one of the best in this colour that we have seen for some time. The double blooms are large and well-formed, with a high centre, and a light fragrance. Growth is very good, which means the foliage also is very good. Repeat flowering most satisfactory, and in all a very welcome new red rose.
