'Sophia Loren ®' rose Reviews & Comments

I bought this rose because how can one resist a buxom red rose from the 60s with that name? Harkness's description: 'The Sophia Loren Hybrid Tea Rose variety produces masses of red blooms from early summer to the first frosts. A characteristic feature is a large number of velvety petals, which is why the flowers look elegant and very decorative. Also of note is a strong, but pleasant and not very obsessive scent of flowers.' Not quite sure what the last sentence means, but so far on my first bloom on a hot day in the high 20s C no scent other than the very slightest suggestion of one was detectable (and I've been sniffing at short intervals all day). However, the Russian equivalent of Helpmefind (or the website I think of in that way, anyway) states that it has a 'pleasant strong smell', so one lives in hope. I'll update this if the blooms indeed prove to be decently scented. PS: Having done a little more research, Russian websites tend describe it as strongly scented and German ones as scentless. PPS: Having smelt now a few blooms at temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees C, I have to say that it is only lightly scented at the best of times (and as often as not, not at all). Also, like some other flowers (violets, reputedly) it is scented only for the first second or so you put your nose into a bloom.
