Story Three – The Matawhero Rose Naming a rose after Gisborne's Matawhero Wines has always been in the back of the minds of world renowned rose breeder, Sam McGredy’s mind. But it took him 10 years for a suitable rose to be created. Matawhero Magic, a magnificent deep bronze colour rose with the scent of heavy musk perfume was launched in 1998 and was dedicated to the memory of the Late Bill Irwin who as the creator or Matawhero Wines himself was a visionary, rose lover and regarded as the pioneer of modern viticulture in New Zealand. Mr McGredy said the rose was the colour of good Gewurztraminer for which Matawhero is most famous. He had picked this rose for Matawhero because it had strong, vibrant colour, in keeping with the wine and its maker, “A gorgeously extroverted lad with panache and style”. (The Gisborne Herald, February 2, 1998) The 'Matawhero Magic' Rose was awarded The Certificate of Merit at The Hague and now graces the new gardens at the historic Matawhero Cellar door in Riverpoint Road since the Searle’s purchased and rejuvenated the lovely 38 acre property.
