Known since 1837, this is most likely a sport of 'Tuscany'. 'Tuscany Superb' is more vigorous and has larger foliage and fuller flowers than those of 'Tuscany'.

TUSCANY SUPERB Rivers (England), before 1837. Synonyms: Rivers' Superb Tuscan (Rivers, 1837), Superb Tuscany (Rivers, 1846). Habit: Upright shrub; 1,40 m high, 1 m wide; some prickles, bristles. lght green; large elliptical leaflets. Bloom: floriferous; solitary or in 2 to 3s; large, semi-double, flat; visible golden stamens. Colour: velvety garnet-purple (deeper than the colour of 'Tuscany'). Fragrance: Moderate. Fruit: rounded, comparable to that of Rosa gallica officinalis. ....In his book The Rose Amateur's Guide (1837 edition), the english roseman Thomas Rivers indicates..that 'Superb Tuscany' (or 'Superb Toscan') is a seedling of 'Old Tuscan' (i.e. 'Tuscany'...)
