Rose Grandeur Royale
Schelhase, Kassel sold this rose as R. gallica 'Grandeur Royal'. Gravereaux lists it as Malmaisonrose, which he planted again in L'Haÿ-les-Roses. There it was no longer listed in 1970. Gravereaux wrote that it came from England and there was known as 'Great Royal Rose'. Other synonyms are 'Gallica Regalis' and 'Rosiere Hortensia'.
Redouté painted it as Rosa Gallica Regalis, which a comparison of the pictures show is clearly the same rose.
Since it is no longer registered and offered for sale, this must be a gallica cultivar that has been lost.

Great Royal ('Grandesse Royale', 'Grandeur Royale', 'Hortensia', 'Pivoine', 'Pivoine des Hollandais', 'Rose Pivoine', 'Regalis') Gallica. England, pre-1813. The author cites information from different sources... Rose... light lilac pink... pink tending towards Hydrangea pink... Possibly a hybrid between Gallica and Centifolia. 'Aimable Rouge' (Gallica), 'Bourbon' (Gallica), 'Holoserica Regalis' (Gallica), and 'Passe-Princesse' (Gallica), are very possibly synonymous...

Passe Princesse Godefroy (?) before 1813. Synonyms: Grandesse royale (Godefroy). Rose pivoine (Vibert). Grandeur royale (at Rouen). Habit: upright shrub, branches with prickles and bristles. Foliage: not abundant; thick elliptical and rounded leaflets, often three per leaf. Bloom: solitary; double, quartered when expanding, some stamens visible around a small central eye; petals reflex when the bloom ages. Colour: carmine-pink, shaded lilac at the centre, pinkish white at the periphery. Fragrance: strong....According to Prévost, this variety seems to have been obtained by Godefroy, celebrated rosarian at Ville-d'Avray, who called it 'Grandesse royale': thus it would be preferable to call it with this name. In the collection of L'Haÿ it is listed under the synonym 'Passe princesse', a name from Rouen. Concerning the date of breeding, Prévost states 1817, but one finds 1813 in the catalogue of Du Pont. ...One should not confuse its synonym 'Grandeur royale' with a gallica of the same name obtained by Miellez, extinct today.
