Bred by Jacques Foulard (France, before 1838).
Introduced in France by Victor Verdier et fils in 1838 as 'Charles Louis'.

Hybrid China, Hybrid Perpetual.  

Cerise - seashell-pink, purple shading, light pink outer petals.  Strong fragrance.  Large, very full (41+ petals), cluster-flowered, expanded , rounded, scalloped bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  Leafy sepals, long sepals, rounded buds.  

5 to 7 leaflets.

The attribution of 'Charles Louis' in Sangerhausen to Guinoisseau has no basis in literature.

Charles Louis 'The Heir of Brutelle' (1746 in Paris-1800) was a French magistrate of the XVIIIe century impassioned by botany. Prosecutor of the King to the Control of National Forestry Commission, then Adviser at the Court of the Assistances, his botanical work, scorned a little by his contemporaries, were recognized and developed by Willdenow (1765-1812) and De Candolle (1778-1841). Assassinated in 1800, he left an herbarium of approximately 8.000 species and a very important botanical library. He worked in particular on Géraniacées and published in 1792 a work entitled Geranologia, and defined the distinction between the three kinds Geranium, Pelargonium and Erodium.
