'Nigrette' rose Reviews & Comments

Grown in a pot, this is a surprisingly vigorous, healthy and floriferous rose. I avoided growing this rose for many years because of reports of it being a weakling, but now it is one my favorites for both beauty and scent. Gorgeous velvety petals with a strong delicious damask scent with overtones of spiced apples. Its twiggy, dense, bushy growth habit looks perfect in a container. Along with Francis Dubreuil/Barcelona, this is one of the most charming and characterful of all red roses!

Survived its first Iowan winter here in my garden (Zone 5b) with some protection. The plant I received from the grower was a little small and I got midway through summer so it was a little difficult getting it to any size before the winter. I really was not expecting it to pull through for me. It has already had a few blooms and although still small looks to be ready to throw up some nice sized canes. Color and form is quite nice. Blooms are small but the plant wouldn't look right with large blooms. One of my favorites.

You might want to pinch off the blooms and allow the plant to put all of its energy into plant growth. I know you feel like you are missing out when you don't get a chance to see the rose bloom, but this does help.

I agree. I do this with many greys, the few that I let open are stunning, and the plants actually grow without spraying or constant feeding.

This rose, while bearing some of the most extraordinarily dark red blooms, leaves a great deal to be desired as far as the plant is concerned. It lacks any vigor whatsoever, and even under the best conditions cannot be expected to exceed 24". Treat it like a small Floribunda, keep it in a container for best performance, and feed the heck out of it. It will need protection from both Blackspot and Mildew. Be prepared to be disappointed.
