The yellow rose purporting to be 'Atoll' [Meilland, 1971] is wrongly named. It should be orange, fading to pink. There are far too many mistakes of this sort on the helpmefind website and the only solution is to ensure that ALL UPLOADS MUST BE CHECKED by a panel of experts. More and more wrongly named pictures are appearing on your website and every one of them downgrades your usefulness and credibility. Please could some [HMF administrators] take this on for the future and ensure that the existing entries are all checked and edited?

I've found that a quick note to the HMF Admin usually repairs all problems. It's more efficient than posting an undirected comment on a particular rose. You also have the option to rate photos & make comments regarding their accuracy, so that other users will benefit from the combined information of a network of rosarians.

I have sent them a private message regarding the inaccuracy of the photographed yellow rose.

Mislabeled roses are a nuisance - that is correct. But the problem often starts in the nurseries, where attention is seldom placed on correct sourcing and naming. These errors are sometimes propagated over generations. The large rosaries Sangerhausen and L'Haÿ are also full of mislabeled roses. When members post photos of mislabeled roses, that is often a clue to these errors - and thus, quite useful.

You'll be pleased to learn we have taken several steps to address this issue but convening a panel of experts to check each photo is not one of them. Let me explain why.

As we've often pointed out, HelpMeFind is a tool not a service. The point being we do not assume the role of an authoritative entity comprised of experts serving the rose community. Rather, HMF is a "tool" to collect, organize and present the knowledge and expertise of companies and individuals from around the world.

Unlike reference publications, HMF is a constantly growing, evolving and self-correcting mutable resource and is designed to take full advantage of the benefits the internet offers. We have many volunteers from different parts of the world that assume additional responsibility for helping shape and guide the website but ultimately HMF is about bringing the rose community together to share their insight, experience, and love of roses.

The "panel of experts" you seek is YOU and YOUR friends (particularly in your case). We on the other hand provide the mechanism by which people can easily and efficiently contribute fresh insight or identify inaccuracies in the current information.

In the case of photos, every full size photo page includes a button labeled PHOTO ERROR. Use this button to report to HMF when you believe a photo is in error. Doing so immediately tags the photo as potentially inaccurate and alerts everyone, including other website guests.

You stated "There are far too many mistakes of this sort". If you've come across so many examples then the really sad note here is the many missed opportunities to improve HMF.

We currently have over 150,000 photos. Even with a staff of several experts working all day it would take months to review them all. No individual or small group is going to commit to that kind of effort without compensation. Unfortunately, as popular and widely used as HMF is, its level of financial support does not even come close to funding an effort of that magnitude.

Sadly, only a tiny fraction of HMF's users financially support the website and we've had to scale back planned enhancements as such. Maintaining a website like HMF is quite an undertaking requiring considerable expertise and resources.

Ultimately, the answer is for you, and the thousands of other daily visitors, to note any inaccuracies when you come across them. OUR mission is to continually improve HMF to prevent new errors and to make it as easy and convenient as possible for our website guests to identify and report any.

To that end, we have added the following enhancements to our recent photo upload processing upgrade:
- The name and brief description of the plant is prominently displayed for final confirmation.
- An additional note of caution is displayed when a plant name is shared by multiple plants.

This should help minimize the problem going forward but we still need for HMF guests to let us know if they find photos not matching the listing.
