Just a note about the UK name for this rose given as 'Proper Job'...
It seems the name was given with the best of intentions... originally a German bred Tantau rose called 'Gospel' was apparently imported to the UK by the Cornish Rose Company and marketed to appeal to local people in Cornwall and the South West of England in order to support a Charity for terminally ill children..
10 percent of sales would go to the charity... so they chose a name that presumably would appeal to those familiar with the local dialect.. proper job, as Andrew stated, meaning ''something well done'' ''brilliant'' ''perfect'' or used as a term of encouragement...
It would also more likely to be spoken in the local country accent still used by older folk.
In the modern age, with increasing movement of people, the term is less used or understood today I would guess.
So unfortunately, outside of that local area, few would understand its meaning, and it would probably seem rather an odd choice...
There is also a local beer of the same name but I couldn't possibly comment on that..

In 2002 I purchased a rose named 'Gospel' from Perrotts Nursery in Brisbane. I lost the rose in drought onditions about 2005. I wish to replace it. I think it was red with perhaps a silver reverse. Does anyone in Australia remember it?

I can't answer your question, but I had to comment that over here in England, someone in their wisdom decided to call this rose 'Proper Job'. What a ridiculously stupid name, I mean who came up with that?.. it does make me angry. I much prefer 'Gospel' and would have bought it under that name, most likely..

"Praapa jaab" is an expression often used in Devon for something well done, they might also say "That be 'andsome" or "Ideal" as well. There is even a beer named Proper Job. Not that that excuses it for being a rubbish name for a rose!

Andrew, I'm from Cornwall originally, and it's used there too - frequently, or used to be so, I'm not so sure nowadays.. I was brought up on it, so perhaps it's this over familiarity that causes the revulsion...? Nah.. it's just a crap name..

My first year Gospel is kind a burgundy red(must remove from my pink bed),lot of very good substance petals, globular 10 cm flowers, one per stem, short 60 cm bush by now, very healthy greyish blue leaves(despite of lot of mildew and blackspot in my no spray garden cause of the mild last winter),10 basal growth each with flower or bud totally indifferent to the last 4day of heavy rain.No fragrance enough to my nose by now.Tantau describe the color in his 2013 catalogue as ,,romantic pink'''and ,,deep purple on warm summer days turning to a strong burgundy colour on cooler days''.A very promising bush!
