Ever since I first saw this rose growing in the Europa Rosarium in Sangerhausen in Germany, I have been sort of taken in by it, wanting to plant it in my own garden. I finally got to fulfil my wish this year. Of all the beautiful roses growing in the biggest rosarium of the world, this was the rose that facinated me the most. Seeing this rose planted on a low wall forming an edge by a narrow pathway, partly leaning out over this edge, I was stunned. I wondered, and I still do: how come this rose is not more widely known and planted? Has it got something to do with no repeat flowering, lack of disease resistance or rain tolerance? well, that remains to be seen. Now I have it.
Many roses have been named for German cities, like this one. In the Botanical Gardens in Oslo there once grew a substantial shrub rose very much like this one, with the sign saying "Althausen" I have never been able to find out anything at all about this rose, or if there is a rose by this name at all. The Rosarium in these gardens has now been rearranged, and I don`t know what has happened to this rose. If anyone out there should have some information, please let me know.
