Good winter flowering in a warm climate, sweet scent, but not a shapely flower.

The 1828 reference appears to refer to a completely different rose. It could conceivably refer to 'Rosa Camellia Sieb.'/'Camellia Rose'/Rosa laevigata, which I've seen grown as a climber in NSW, so has obviously done the rounds in cultivation.

''Rosa alba... the white Camelliae-Rose, of very beautiful form and dazzling white, thick petals...''

I recognize my Prévost Camélia in both this page and in Laffay Camellia's pictures...
Anyway, I have a question. This rose seems to grow in a different way than others I'm used to see. I never had a 'China' type of rose before. As I said when commenting my picture it can look messy in a bad way, can I hope to train it and obtain some reliable strong branches ( wood ? ), or will it only produce vigorous but thin new growths ? Thanks !

I am mystified as to why this HMF rose record is called 'Camélia Rose', not 'Bengale Camellia'. Prévost's rose was a Bengal-type China Rose, not a Noisette or other hybrid, and as far as I can tell, it was never called 'Camélia Rose' or 'Camellia Rose' until quite recently. Prévost did raise a rose called 'Rose Camellia' or 'Camélia', but it was an Alba, not a Noisette.

There was/is a Noisette called 'Camellia Rose', and I would assume that any references to that name or 'Camélia Rose' would properly belong to that record, rather than with 'Bengale Camellia'. 'Camellia Rouge' seems to be the same as 'Camellia Rose', both attributed to Laffay.

This seems clear to me, so what am I missing?

Thanks,
Virginia
