This is a damn good site. Its hard to understand why you are so opposed to on site advertising. I doubt it would affect your traffic or your reputation. You could easily make enough to cover your expenses and donate the rest to worthy causes if making a dollar through your labor offends you. There must be nurseries who'd be willing to advertise with you and Google adsense can be extremely profitable and generally chooses appropriate ads. You can always write a disclaimer.
