Does this rose have plenty of big, ample candy red thorns? I used to have an unIDed rose that I thought was Plum Perfect, but I discarded the possibility because of the supposed scent. Mine was entirely devoid of it.
Now that I'm reading several reports here that other people cannot smell it, I believe it might've indeed been PP after all.

How do we know this is a Hybrid Pendulina if we don't know the parentage?

We don't. The classes listed are based on what the quoted references state it is. While most say that it is a Bourbon or Hybrid Bourbon, the 1895 reference from Journal des Roses believes it is a cross between a Rosa alpina (i.e. pendulina) and a Bourbon.

The property at Renmark (Ruston's) was on the market for 4 years, with prospective (but not eventual) buyers promising to sign the contract "next week", so it was neglected in that time. You should have seen how the bracteata in the photo spread along the cut-flower rose beds, following the irrigation lines. You can't kill it with glyphos or blackberry spray, even when there's no risk of off-target damage.

Margaret, may I ask for a comment on the "unpleasant fragrance", just wondering what it would be akin to. Call it morbid curiosity.

I haven't grown it for over 30 years. There's one I can check in a few days' time.
