From Wills cigarette cards, Roses – a series of 40 cards. Issued in 1936. No 40 W. E. CHAPLIN (Hybrid Tea) Introduced 1931 Deep crimson The blooms are large and well-formed with high pointed centre, which makes it a good variety for exhibition or garden purposes. The habit of growth is vigorous and free. The foliage dark green, free of disease. If the blooms are required for exhibition purposes, it should be pruned hard, leaving one eye only on each shoot. For garden purposes it should be moderately pruned to three eyes about the third week in March. It is one of the best red varieties in cultivation. Awarded a Gold Medal of the National Rose Society.
